Twenty years ago I hyperextended my right big toe in high school wrestling practice. It has always bothered me a little bit off and on, but then I started jiu-jitsu a few weeks ago and ever since I haven't had any problems. I thought jiu-jitsu cured me.

Then two days ago, I was learning a basic guard sweep and I rolled my partners weight onto my active toes instead of over the top of my foot. It hurt like hell. I was able to finish the class without too much pain, but once I got to the laundromat after class I could barely walk.

Any suggestions for recovery and/or exercises to make reactivating the injury less likely going forward? I think this will probably be a life-long issue for me, but I want to do anything and everything I can to mitigate it.

I'm aware of Kurt Osiander's taping method and will use that when I'm able to train again.
