Yoga for BJJ

Middle aged, outta shape judoka that has found yoga a great help for living with a well used body.

I have certainly tried some of the knees over toes guy suggestions, one of my favorites is backpedaling sled drags, really helps my tendinitis in my knees.

Colin, I too am suffering some due to age and refuse to let that be the end of my journey. Unfortunately as we age we have to accept that there are things that are either unhealthy, unsafe or unnecessary for our overall fitness and ability to partake in the things we value.

Tammi, muscle growth doesn’t mean you aren’t building strength and stability. Volume or muscle mass is not an adequate measure by far.

I used to dread down dog, now it is one of my favorite active rest positions. What unlocked it for me was finding neutral neck and upper back, balancing the load between my arms and legs; lastly allowing my body to poor into the position. Like a suspension bridge, you let your navel trend to the ground and your spine becomes and loose hammock.

The twisting variation here is an inverted players friend…

Already feel an inch taller, this is such a good shirt flow for spine mobility and release.

Hello from 2025! My goal is to use my skill accrual drive to push my overall fitness goals by doing the instructor courses here. I hope to be helping others recover from or prevent injuries as an extension of my practice.

One comment I’ll make to OP you may not be able to do so deep of a squat without risk of injury, pay attention to your body. I have some insight there having had shoulder and knee arthroscopy.

This series should be the standard of knowledge for all yoga practitioners. This helps the individual and the instructor greatly.

The half lunge twist seems useful for inverted players.

I have only just begun my training for instructor, but one thing I am aware of is that there seems to be a lack of understanding in some groups. Maybe try suggesting it as a mobility or recover seminar. It took my wife almost twenty years to get me into yoga, so I am one of the thick headed types too. Lastly as I’ve noticed some of the content can be tailored to the theme of the day or week, maybe coordinate with the other instructors, if the emphasis is guard perse work on the mobility that makes your guard killer so on and so on.
